United Airlines 787 makes emergency landing

Mechanical issue forces emergency landing of United Airlines 787 in New Orleans

CHICAGO (AP) -- One of the newest planes in the fleet of United Airlines made an emergency landing in New Orleans on Tuesday because of a mechanical issue.

United says the plane, a Boeing 787, was flying from Houston to Newark, N.J., when the issue arose. It landed without incident in New Orleans at 9:25 a.m. Central Time. Fire trucks met the plane, which is common in emergency landings.

The flight had 174 passengers and 10 crew members.

United says it will work with Boeing Co. to find the cause of the diversion.

United Continental Holdings Inc. has three of the new 787s so far after taking its first delivery in September.
