UnitedHealth Group (UNH) Tops Q1 Earnings and Revenue Estimates

UnitedHealth Group (UNH) came out with quarterly earnings of $3.73 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.60 per share. This compares to earnings of $3.04 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 3.61%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this largest U.S. health insurer would post earnings of $3.20 per share when it actually produced earnings of $3.28, delivering a surprise of 2.50%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates four times.

UnitedHealth, which belongs to the Zacks Medical - HMOs industry, posted revenues of $60.31 billion for the quarter ended March 2019, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.05%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $55.19 billion. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates three times over the last four quarters.

The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.

UnitedHealth shares have lost about 7.6% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 15.9%.

While UnitedHealth has underperformed the market so far this year, the question that comes to investors' minds is: what's next for the stock?
