CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) _ Unum Group (UNM) on Wednesday reported a third-quarter loss of $284.7 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.
On a per-share basis, the Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company said it had a loss of $1.30. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were $1.37 per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.28 per share.
The insurance company posted revenue of $2.93 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $2.92 billion, also surpassing Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.89 billion.
Unum shares have fallen 38 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has declined nearly 1 percent. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $33.98, a drop of 36 percent in the last 12 months.
