US Indexes Close Higher Friday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,586.90 on Friday with a gain of 161.39 points or 0.57%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,477.13 for a gain of 30.30 points or 0.88%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 11,579.94 for a gain of 158.96 points or 1.39%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 25.00 with a loss of 1.36 points or -5.16%.

For the week, the Nasdaq gained 4.6%, the S&P 500 gained 3.8% and the Dow Jones gained 3.3%. For the year, the Nasdaq is up 27.29%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 7.63% and the Dow Jones is down -0.40%.


Friday's Market Movers

U.S. indexes closed higher Friday and reported their best weekly gains since August. China's Shanghai Composite gained 1.68% after news of a better than expected September Caixin Services PMI.

Across sectors, semiconductors led gains. Across the board, the following stocks led gains:

  • Xilinx (NASDAQ:XLNX) gained 14.11% on talks of a merger with AMD

  • Precigen (NASDAQ:PGEN) 29.02%

  • eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) 6.47%

  • Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) 3.01%



In other news:

  • The energy sector was lower with Hurricane Delta causing concern for the Gulf of Mexico.

  • Wholesale inventories increased 0.4% in August following a decrease of -0.2%.

  • The Baker Hughes oil rig count showed an increase of three rigs in the U.S., an increase of five rigs in Canada and a decrease of 45 rigs internationally.



Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,637.55 for a gain of 9.00 points or 0.55%. The S&P 600 closed at 926.19 for a gain of 4.12 points or 0.45%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 11,559.80 for a gain of 129.52 points or 1.13%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 7,378.73 for a loss of 34.96 points or -0.47%.

Other Notable Indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,996.36 for a gain of 4.82 points or 0.24%; the S&P 100 at 1,604.76 for a gain of 17.03 points or 1.07%; the Nasdaq 100 at 11,725.85 for a gain of 174.91 points or 1.51%; the Russell 3000 at 2,047.36 for a gain of 17.46 points or 0.86%; the Russell 1000 at 1,943.01 for a gain of 16.94 points or 0.88%; the Wilshire 5000 at 35,720.02 for a gain of 302.04 points or 0.85%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 620.21 for a loss of 2.91 points or -0.47%.
