US Indexes Close Higher Monday
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,066.47 on Monday with a gain of 190.85 points or 0.68%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,133.64 for a gain of 23.35 points or 0.75%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,632.49 for a gain of 112.60 points or 1.32%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.87 for a loss of 0.47 points or -3.81%.
Monday's market movers
U.S. indexes ended higher Monday with positive trade sentiment and a merger announcement from Charles Schwab (NYSE:SCHW). China said it would increase the penalties for intellectual property rights violations, which has been a key point of concern for President Trump in trade relations. Top trade officials also reported that a trade deal could still be possible by the end of the year.
Monday included several merger spotlights. Charles Schwab officially announced it would be buying TD Ameritrade (NASDAQ:AMTD) in an all-stock deal valued at $26 billion. Other merger announcements included LVMH's (MIL:LVMH) acquisition of Tiffany & Co. (NYSE:TIF) and Novartis' (NYSE:NVS) acquisition of The Medicines Co. (MDCO). In the S&P 500, technology, health care and financials all gained.

The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 1.56%, six-month bills at a rate of 1.58% and two-year notes at a rate of 1.601%.

The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,369.41 for a gain of 202.13 points or 1.99%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,729.39 for a gain of 125.43 points or 1.31%.
