US Indexes Close Mostly Flat Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,949.99 on Monday with a gain of 14.92 points or 0.06%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,991.78 for a loss of 0.29 points or -0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,112.46 for a loss of 5.21 points or -0.06%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 14.91 for a loss of 0.41 points or -2.68%.

Monday's market movers

Markets closed mostly flat Monday with investors concerned over global growth after a weak data report on eurozone manufacturing activity. The eurozone manufacturing PMI reported an 83-month low at 45.6, down from 47 and missed expectations of 47.3. Germany was of central concern with one of the lowest readings in the eurozone. On the international front, investors were also watching comments from the United Nations General Assembly, where tensions with Iran over alleged oil strikes was a key focus.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Chicago Fed National Activity Index decreased to 0.10 in August from 0.41.
  • The Markit Composite PMI increased to 51 in September from 50.7. Separately, the Markit Manufacturing PMI increased to 51.0 from 50.3 and the Markit Services PMI increased to 50.9 from 50.7.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 1.905% and six-month bills at a rate of 1.860%.

In the S&P 500, consumer staples led gains and health care led losses. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains and losses:

  • Nike (NYSE:NKE) 1.29%
  • American Express (NYSE:AXP) 1.23%
  • McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) 1.03%
  • UnitedHealth (NYSE:UNH) -1.77%
  • Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ:WBA) -1.24%
  • Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) -1.23%

Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,558.25 for a loss of 1.52 points or -0.10%. The S&P 600 closed at 962.44 for a gain of 0.33 points or 0.034%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 9,955.70 for a loss of 8.27 points or -0.08%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,503.28 for a gain of 16.14 points or 0.17%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,947.83 for a gain of 3.19 points or 0.16%; the S&P 100 at 1,321.21 for a loss of 0.49 points or -0.037%; the Nasdaq 100 at 7,818.61 for a loss of 4.94 points or -0.063%; the Russell 3000 at 1,754.35 for a loss of 0.96 points or -0.055%; the Russell 1000 at 1,654.19 for a gain of 0.017 points or 0.0010%; the Wilshire 5000 at 30,617.70 for a loss of 0.14 points or -0.00046%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 725.96 for a gain of 2.47 points or 0.34%.
