US Indexes Close Mostly Higher Thursday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,805.53 on Thursday with a loss of 28.42 points or -0.11%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,010.29 for a gain of 5.77 points or 0.19%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,185.80 for a gain of 66 points or 0.81%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.61 for a loss of 0.40 points or -2.86%.

Thursday's market movers


U.S. indexes finished mostly higher on one of the busiest earnings days of the third quarter. Top results included the following:

  • Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN): Revenue of $69.98 billion increased by 23.7% year over year and beat estimates by $1.26 billion. Third-quarter GAAP earnings per share of $4.23 missed estimates of $4.62.
  • Intel (NASDAQ:INTC): Revenue of $19.2 billion increased 0.2% year over year and beat estimates by $1.13 billion. Third-quarter GAAP earnings per share of $1.35 beat estimates by 19 cents and non-GAAP earnings of $1.42 per share beat estimates by 18 cents.
  • On Deck Capital (NYSE:ONDK): Reported earnings per share of 10 cents, beating estimates of 7 cents. Stock gained 17.36%.
  • Twitter (NYSE:TWTR): Reported a loss of 3 cents per share, missing estimates of 17 cents. Stock down 20.81%.



Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Durable goods orders decreased 1.1% in September following an increase of 0.3%. Durable goods orders excluding transportation decreased 0.3% in September and durable goods orders excluding defense decreased 1.2%.
  • Jobless claims decreased to 212,000 from 218,000.
  • The Markit Composite PMI increased to 51.2 in October from 51.
  • New home sales decreased 0.7% in September to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 0.701 million.
  • The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills at a rate of 1.71%, eight-week bills at a rate of 1.680% and seven-year notes at a rate of 1.657%.



In the S&P 500, the technology and consumer staples sectors led gains. In the S&P 100, the following stocks led gains and losses for the day:

  • Raytheon (NYSE:RTN) 4.02%
  • Visa (NYSE:V) 3.11%
  • Mastercard (NYSE:MA) 3.01%
  • Ford (NYSE:F) -6.08%
  • Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) -5.78%
  • 3M (MMM ) -3.77%
  • AT&T (NYSE:T) -2.66%
  • Comcast (CMCSA) -2.25%



Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,550.18 for a loss of 2.67 points or -0.17%. The S&P 600 closed at 961.55 for a loss of 2.27 points or -0.24%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 9,832.24 for a gain of 7.56 points or 0.08%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,577.14 for a loss of 49.36 points or -0.51%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,949.60 for a gain of 0.89 points or 0.046%; the S&P 100 at 1,333.22 for a gain of 2.25 points or 0.17%; the Nasdaq 100 at 7,966.72 for a gain of 77.25 points or 0.98%; the Russell 3000 at 1,762.62 for a gain of 4.23 points or 0.24%; the Russell 1000 at 1,662.28 for a gain 4.46 points or 0.27%; the Wilshire 5000 at 30,778.34 for a gain of 70.28 points or 0.23%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 732.89 for a loss of 2.23 points or -0.30%.
