US Indexes Regain Some Losses to Close Higher Wednesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,745.09 on Wednesday with a gain of 161.41 points or 0.56%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,253.05 for a gain of 15.87 points or 0.49%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 9,129.24 for a gain of 60.66 points or 0.67%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.75 for a loss of 0.040 points or -0.29%.

Wednesday's market movers

U.S. indexes gained Wednesday, with some easing in the Middle East conflicts. Iran fired missiles at bases with U.S. troops in Iraq, but there were no casualties. President Donald Trump also suggested no further strikes by the U.S. were imminent as Iran appears to be standing down following a tweet from Iran's military leader.

In the Middle East, a non-military plane crashed with approximately 160 casualties. The Boeing 737 involved in the crash was operated by Ukraine Air. Boeing's (NYSE:BA) stock was down 1.75% on Wednesday.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The MBA Mortgage Applications Index increased 13.5% following a decrease of 5.3%. The MBA's average 30-year mortgage rate decreased to 3.91% from 3.95%.
  • The ADP private sector employment report showed an increase of 202,000 payrolls in December, beating estimates of approximately 160,000.
  • The EIA's Weekly Petroleum Status Report showed an increase of 1.164 million barrels of oil inventory.
  • The Treasury held an auction for 10-year notes at a rate of 1.869%.
  • Consumer credit outstanding increased by $12.51 billion in November.

In the S&P 500, technology and health care led gains. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • UnitedHealth (NYSE:UNH) 2.38%
  • American Express (AXP) 2.11%
  • McDonald's (MCD) 1.94%
  • Home Depot (NYSE:HD) 1.84%
  • Visa (NYSE:V) 1.80%
  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) 1.75%

Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,663.96 for a gain of 5.65 points or 0.34%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,016.51 for a gain of 2.42 points or 0.24%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,689.23 for a gain of 34.57 points or 0.32%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,830.21 for a gain of 6.58 points or 0.07%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 2,052.96 for a gain of 3.62 points or 0.18%; the S&P 100 at 1,455.50 for a gain of 8.13 points or 0.56%; the Nasdaq 100 at 8,912.37 for a gain of 65.92 points or 0.75%; the Russell 3000 at 1,905.03 for a gain of 9.02 points or 0.48%; the Russell 1000 at 1,797.47 for a gain of 8.70 points or 0.49%; the Wilshire 5000 at 33,238.45 for a gain of 155.46 points or 0.47%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 748.82 for a gain of 1.67 points or 0.22%.
