US Large-Cap Indexes Close With Gains on Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,036.22 on Monday with a gain of 31.33 points or 0.11%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,122.03 for a gain of 1.57 points or 0.05%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,549.94 for a gain of 9.11 points or 0.11%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher as well, reaching 12.46 for a gain of 0.41 points or 3.4%.

Monday's market movers


U.S. large-cap indexes led stocks to a mostly positive close on Monday. The U.S. announced a 90-day extension for U.S. businesses to obtain the licenses to do business with Huawei. China trade negotiation news was positive overall, and the central bank of China lowered a key borrowing rate that should provide stimulus for the country. In the Dow Jones, retail stocks were higher ahead of retail earnings releases this week, including Home Depot (NYSE:HD) and Target (NYSE:TGT).

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NAHB Housing Market Index decreased to 70 this month from last month's 71.

  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 1.565% and six-month bills at a rate of 1.550%

  • The Treasury's Treasury International Capital report showed overall net capital flows of $70.5 billion in September, foreign bond investment of $-30.5 billion and net long-term flows of $-41.1 billion.



In the S&P 500, consumer staples, consumer discretionary and technology led gains. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • Disney (NYSE:DIS) 2.06%

  • UnitedHealth (NYSE:UNH) 1.31%

  • Nike (NYSE:NKE) 1.23%

  • Walmart (NYSE:WMT) 1.16%

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,592.34 for a loss of 4.11 points or -0.26%. The S&P 600 closed at 978.66 for a loss of 4.05 points or -0.41%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,175.86 for a loss of 23.55 points or -0.23%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,672.57 for a loss of 39.39 points or -0.41%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,997.91 for a loss of 2.70 points or -0.13%; the S&P 100 at 1,390.32 for a gain of 1.51 points or 0.11%; the Nasdaq 100 at 8,328.48 for a gain of 12.96 points or 0.16%; the Russell 3000 at 1,827.71 for a gain of 0.60 points or 0.033%; the Russell 1000 at 1,724.79 for a gain of 0.92 points or 0.053%; the Wilshire 5000 at 31,873.40 for a gain of 11.40 points or 0.036%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 740.39 for a loss of 0.71 points or -0.096%.
