US Large Cap Stocks Mostly Lower on Monday

Large-cap stocks were mostly lower on Monday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,550.98 for a loss of 45.74 points or 0.22%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,341.59 for a loss of 2.39 points or 0.10%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,840.37 for a gain of 11.64 points or 0.20%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 12.57 for a loss of 0.39 points or 3.01%.


Monday's market movers

The market continued to report losses with investors uncertain about Trump administration policy plans following the withdrawn health care reform vote last week. There were no major economic reports on the calendar Monday. Charles Evans from the Chicago Federal Reserve spoke with Bloomberg on Monday reporting that the U.S. Federal Reserve could raise rates four times in 2017 if considerable improvements are reported in the economy's leading indicators.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

  • Chevron (CVX) -1.58%.
  • Goldman Sachs (GS) -1.28%.
  • Verizon (VZ) -1.09%.
  • General Electric (GE) -0.94%.
  • American Express (AXP) -0.77%.



In the broad market, real estate led losses. Technology stocks were mostly higher for the day, but the S&P 500 technology sector reported no change.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,357.32 for a gain of 2.68 points or 0.20%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 826.15 for a gain of 0.57 points or 0.07%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,143.28 for a gain of 24.02 points or 0.30%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,426.12 for a loss of 13.21 points or 0.14%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,691.81 for a loss of 2.60 points or 0.15%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,038.09 for a loss of 0.99 points or 0.10%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,386.98 for a loss of 0.98 points or 0.07%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,297.61 for a loss of 1.20 points or 0.09%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 646.53 for a loss of 2.28 points or 0.35%.
