US Market Indexes Close With Gains for a Second Day

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,531.35 on Monday with a gain of 98.19 points or 0.42%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,549.69 for a gain of 17.75 points or 0.70%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,823.47 for a gain of 84.61 points or 1.26%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 21.36 for a loss of 0.02 points or -0.09%.

Monday's market movers

U.S. market indexes closed with gains for a second day on Monday. Technology led the day's returns as the Consumer Electronics Show began in Las Vegas. Trade discussions between the U.S. and China also helped investors' outlook for stocks.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI decreased to 57.6 in December from 60.7.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills and six-month bills at rates of 2.410% and 2.470% respectively.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,737.26 for a gain of 169.61 points or 1.98%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 8,894.58 for a gain of 79.82 points or 0.91%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,702.82 for a gain of 18.48 points or 1.10%; the S&P 100 at 1,133.22 for a gain of 6.58 points or 0.58%; the Russell 3000 at 1,501.33 for a gain of 12.79 points or 0.86%; the Russell 1000 at 1,409.36 for a gain of 11.02 points or 0.79%; the Wilshire 5000 at 26,331.42 for a gain of 250.62 points or 0.96%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 650.40 for a gain of 3.41 points or 0.53%.
