US Market Indexes Close Higher Tuesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,877.33 on Tuesday with a gain of 197.43 points or 0.77%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,864.36 for a gain of 24.13 points or 0.85%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,785.72 for a gain of 83.35 points or 1.08%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 14.92 for a loss of 1.39 points or -8.52%.

Tuesday's market movers


U.S. stocks closed higher Tuesday with tech stocks rebounding after the U.S. announced some short-term exemptions for the trade block with Huawei. Alphabet's Google (GOOG) (GOOGL) was the first of the tech companies announcing it would follow the new government guidance, renewing some of its business with Huawei.

A positive earnings report from Home Depot (HD) also helped risk appetite. The home improvement retailer was the first of the week's big retail companies to report earnings. The company beat earnings per share estimates by 7 cents and also beat estimates for revenue. Other retailers also reporting earnings on Tuesday included: Kohl's (KSS), TJX (TJX), J.C. Penney (JCP), AutoZone (AZO), Nordstrom (JWN) and Urban Outfitters (URBN).

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Existing home sales decreased 0.4% in April to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.19 million.

  • The Treasury held an auction for 52-week bills at a rate of 2.28%.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • Intel (INTC) 2.07%

  • Caterpillar (CAT) 2.06%

  • Apple (AAPL) 1.92%



Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,545.25 for a gain of 20.28 points or 1.33%. The S&P 600 closed at 939.63 for a gain of 11.40 points or 1.23%; the Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth Total Stock Market Index closed at 9,829.27 for a gain of 132.60 points or 1.37%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value Total Stock Market Index closed at 9,519.42 for a gain of 85.34 points or 0.90%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,899.74 for a gain of 24.05 points or 1.28%; the S&P 100 at 1,267.75 for a gain of 8.90 points or 0.71%; the Russell 3000 at 1,687.58 for a gain of 15.48 points or 0.93%; the Russell 1000 at 1,586.86 for a gain of 14.08 points or 0.90%; the Wilshire 5000 at 29,450.72 for a gain of 265.56 points or 0.91%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 700.98 for a gain of 4.57 points or 0.66%.
