US Market Indexes Close Higher Wednesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,218.13 on Wednesday with a gain of 39.00 points or 0.15%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,873.40 for a gain of 6.16 points or 0.21%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,895.55 for a gain of 46.86 points or 0.60%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 13.74 for a gain of 0.38 points or 2.84%.

Wednesday's market movers

Optimism over trade negotiations with China increased investors' risk appetite Wednesday, helping stocks to gain. On the economic calendar, the following reports were also released.

  • The MBA Mortgage Applications Index increased 18.6% and the MBA reported an average 30-year mortgage rate of 4.36%.
  • The ADP's March private sector employment report showed an increase of 129,000 jobs, below consensus of 170,000.
  • The Markit Composite PMI decreased to 54.6 from 55.5.
  • The Markit Services PMI decreased to 55.3 from 56.0.
  • The ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI decreased to 56.1 from 59.7.

For the day, Treasuries were mostly lower and the U.S. Dollar Index fell. The 30-year Treasury's price was down -4/32 to a yield of 2.934%. The U.S. Dollar Index was down 0.20% to 97.11.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • Home Depot (HD) 2.21%
  • Intel (INTC) 2.06%
  • Goldman Sachs (GS) 1.70%

Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,560.91 for a gain of 7.59 points or 0.49%. The S&P 600 closed at 950.39 for a gain of 3.86 points or 0.41%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,924.47 for a gain of 50.18 points or 0.51%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,574.95 for a gain of 22.27 points or 0.23%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,924.65 for a gain of 9.40 points or 0.49%; the S&P 100 at 1,268.05 for a gain of 2.01 points or 0.16%; the Russell 3000 at 1,694.33 for a gain of 4.45 points or 0.26%; the Russell 1000 at 1,592.48 for a gain of 3.91 points or 0.25%; the Wilshire 5000 at 29,680.52 for a gain of 115.35 points or 0.39%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 709.91 for a gain of 1.05 points or 0.15%.
