US Market Indexes Gain

U.S. market indexes were higher on Thursday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,182.53 for a gain of 8.84 points or 0.04%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,433.79 for a gain of 0.65 points or 0.03%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,321.76 for a gain of 24.38 points or 0.39%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.16 for a loss of 0.23 points or 2.21%.


Thursday's market movers

Stocks were higher after investors gained a better understanding of the factors involved in proceedings with the former FBI director. Financial sector stocks led gains for the day with the House of Representatives voting on the Financial Choice Act.

Economic reports released on Thursday included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased by 10,000 to 245,000.

  • Mortgage rates were lower for the week. The Primary Mortgage Market Survey from Freddie Mac (FHLMC) showed a decrease from 3.89% to 3.94% for 30-year fixed mortgages and a decrease to 3.16% from 3.19% for 15-year fixed mortgages.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • Caterpillar (CAT) 1.45%.

  • Goldman Sachs (GS) 1.38%.

  • JPMorgan (JPM) 1.24%.

  • Boeing (BA) 0.97%.

  • IBM (IBM) 0.74%.



Technology stocks were also higher for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.23%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,415.61 for a gain of 18.94 points or 1.36%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 857.88 for a gain of 11.68 points or 1.38%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,538.56 for a gain of 81.82 points or 0.97%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,552.50 for a gain of 114.98 points or 1.22%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,750.76 for a gain of 13.92 points or 0.80%; the S&P 100 at 1,073.04 for a loss of 0.43 points or 0.04%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,441.95 for a gain of 2.16 points or 0.15%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,348.69 for a gain of 0.71 points or 0.05%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 658.82 for a loss of 0.28 points or 0.04%.
