US Market Indexes Gain With Positive Outlook for Jobs Report

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20689.24 for a gain of 39.03 points or 0.19%. The S&P 500 closed at 2360.16 for a gain of 1.32 points or 0.06%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5898.61 for a gain of 3.93 points or 0.07%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.79 for a loss of -0.59 points or -4.77%.


Tuesday's market movers

Stocks regained some of Monday's losses as investors considered Friday's jobs report estimates as an indication of improving economic indicators. Economic reports on Tuesday included the following:

  • The international trade deficit decreased to -$43.6 billion.
  • Factory orders increased by 1% for the month.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Boeing (BA) 1.16%

United Technologies (UTX) 0.95%

Chevron (CVX) 0.80%

Apple (AAPL) 0.74%

Coca-Cola (KO) 0.64%

General Electric (GE) 0.47%

ExxonMobil (XOM) 0.37%

Intel (INTC) 0.33%

JPMorgan (JPM) 0.33%

In the broad market, energy stocks led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector up 0.08%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1368.18 for a loss of -1.49 points or -0.11%; the S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 828.79 for a gain of 0.42 points or 0.05%; the Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8201.14 for a loss of -18.81 points or -0.23%; the Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9557.16 for a gain of 18.20 points or 0.19%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1707.93 for a loss of -1.62 points or -0.09%; the S&P 100 Index at 1047.21 for a gain of 1.68 points or 0.16%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1398.22 for a gain of 0.56 points or 0.04%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1308.14 for a gain of 0.69 points or 0.05%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 651.10 for a gain of 1.26 points or 0.19%.
