US Market Indexes Higher Friday With Losses for the Week

U.S. market indexes ended the day higher on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20902.98 for a gain of 44.79 points or 0.21%. The S&P 500 closed at 2372.60 for a gain of 7.73 points or 0.33%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5861.73 for a gain of 22.92 points or 0.39%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.66 for a loss of -0.64 points or -5.20%.


For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down -0.47%. The S&P 500 Index decreased by -0.42% and the Nasdaq Composite lost -0.14%.

Friday's market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Friday included the following:

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the Employment Situation report which showed an increase of 235,000 jobs. The report beat consensus of 200,000 jobs. The unemployment rate also decreased to 4.7%.

  • The Baker Hughes weekly rig count showed a decrease of eight oil rigs in North America.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

General Electric (GE) 2.09%

UnitedHealth (UNH) 1.17%

Caterpillar (CAT) 1.01%

Procter & Gamble (PG) 0.81%

Visa (NYSE:V) 0.70%

3M (MMM) 0.69%

Coca-Cola (KO) 0.62%

Cisco (CSCO) 0.56%

Chevron (CVX) 0.52%

IBM (IBM) 0.37%

In the broad market, the utilities sector led gains. Technology was also higher for the day with a gain of 0.53% from the S&P 500 technology sector.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1365.26 for a gain of 5.15 points or 0.38%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 830.27 for a gain of 3.01 points or 0.36%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8185.14 for a gain of 33.84 points or 0.42%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9545.14 for a gain of 30.67 points or 0.32%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1710.90 for a gain of 7.17 points or 0.42%; the S&P 100 Index at 1055.02 for a gain of 3.01 points or 0.29%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1404.04 for a gain of 4.67 points or 0.33%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1314.26 for a gain of 4.33 points or 0.33%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 652.11 for a gain of 2.77 points or 0.43%.
