US Market Indexes Lower on Friday

U.S. market indexes were lower Friday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,547.76 for a loss of -30.95 points or -0.15%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,348.69 for a loss of -7.15 points or -0.30%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,910.52 for a loss of -6.26 points or -0.11%. The VIX Volatility Index increased to 14.63 for a gain of 0.48 points or 3.39%.


For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.48%, the S&P 500 gained 0.86% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.82%.

Friday's market movers

Stocks traded lower with the news President Donald Trump will be releasing his tax reform plans next week. Economic reports released for the day included the following:

  • The PMI Composite increased to 52.7.
  • Existing home sales increased to 5.710 million SAAR.
  • The Baker Hughes North American Rig Count decreased to 956.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

Verizon (VZ) -2.40%

General Electric (GE) -2.38%

JPMorgan (JPM) -1.20%

In the broad market, financial stocks led losses. Technology was also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.21%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1379.85 for a loss of -4.30 points or -0.31%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 839.36 for a loss of -2.67 points or -0.32%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8246.74 for a loss of -37.14 points or -0.45%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9642.28 for a loss of -14.36 points or -0.15%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1717.66 for a loss of -3.31 points or -0.19%; the S&P 100 Index at 1037.07 for a loss of -3.39 points or -0.33%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1394.29 for a loss of -4.18 points or -0.30%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1303.24 for a loss of -3.89 points or -0.30%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 653.15 for a loss of -0.55 points or -0.08%.
