U.S. market indexes were mixed on Thursday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20934.55 for a loss of -15.55 points or -0.07%. The S&P 500 closed at 2381.38 for a loss of -3.88 points or -0.16%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5900.76 for a gain of 0.71 points or 0.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 11.23 for a loss of -0.40 points or -3.44%.


Thursday's market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Thursday included the following:

  • Housing starts increased to 1.288 million SAAR from 1.251 million SAAR.
  • Jobless claims decreased by 2,000 to 241,000.
