US Market Indexes Mixed With Gains

U.S. market indexes were mixed on Friday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,914.62 for a loss of 19.93 points or 0.10%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,378.25 for a loss of 3.13 points or 0.13%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,901.00 for a gain of 0.24 points or 0.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.29 for a gain of 0.08 points or 0.71%.


For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.05%. The S&P 500 gained 0.22%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.65%.

Friday's market movers

Economic reports affecting trading on Friday included the following:

  • Industrial production reported no change for the month, below consensus of 0.2% and above the previous month's report of -0.1%.
  • The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 97.6 from 96.3 and also beat the consensus estimate of 97.2.
  • The Conference Board's Leading Economic Indicators Index increased by 0.6% with a consensus estimate of 0.4% and a previous report of 0.6%.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count decreased to 1,065 from 1,083.

  • UnitedHealth (UNH) -0.93%.
  • IBM (IBM) -0.90%.



In the broad market, materials stocks led gains and financial stocks led losses. Technology was lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.17%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,391.52 for a gain of 5.50 points or 0.40%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 849.54 for a gain of 5.46 points or 0.65%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,306.49 for a gain of 18.18 points or 0.22%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,714.43 for a gain of 27.90 points or 0.29%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,731.14 for a gain of 2.92 points or 0.17%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,055.34 for a loss of 2.48 points or 0.23%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,410.38 for a loss of 0.99 points or 0.07%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,318.61 for a loss of 1.43 points or 0.11%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 657.34 for a gain of 1.46 points or 0.22%.
