US Market Indexes Report Losses for March

U.S. market indexes ended the month lower with losses for March. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20663.22 for a loss of -65.27 points or -0.31%. The S&P 500 closed at 2362.72 for a loss of -5.34 points or -0.23%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5911.74 for a loss of -2.61 points or -0.04%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.36 for a gain of 0.82 points or 7.11%.


For the month, the Dow Jones reported a loss of -0.72%. The S&P 500 reported a loss of -0.04% and the Nasdaq reported a gain of 1.49%.

Friday's market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Friday included the following:

  • Personal income increased 0.4% for the month and the PCE Price Index reported a 2.1% gain.
  • The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 96.9.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count decreased to 979.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses for the day:

ExxonMobil (XOM) -2.02%

DuPont (DD) -1.60%

JPMorgan (JPM) -1.34%

Financial stocks led losses overall for the day. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 were lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.19%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1385.92 for a gain of 3.57 points or 0.26%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 844.17 for a gain of 1.75 points or 0.21%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8308.64 for a gain of 25.90 points or 0.31%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9633.09 for a gain of 14.86 points or 0.15%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1719.65 for a gain of 1.07 points or 0.06%; the S&P 100 Index at 1046.06 for a loss of -3.12 points or -0.30%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1401.50 for a loss of -2.24 points or -0.16%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1310.06 for a loss of -2.55 points or -0.19%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 653.12 for a loss of -0.59 points or -0.09%.
