US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,658.02 for a gain of 1.92 points or 0.01%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,357.16 for a gain of 1.62 points or 0.07%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,880.93 for a gain of 3.11 points or 0.05%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 14.05 for a gain of 1.18 points or 9.17%.

Monday's market movers

Investors were cautiously optimistic of first-quarter earnings helping stocks gain on Monday. The Labor Market Conditions Index was the main report affecting trading on Monday. It decreased to 0.4 from a previously revised 1.5.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • Caterpillar (CAT) 1.70%.
  • Travelers (TRV) 0.80%.
  • Home Depot (HD) 0.73%.
  • Chevron (CVX) 0.52%.
  • ExxonMobil (XOM) 0.45%.

In the broad market, energy stocks led gains. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 were lower with the sector down -0.19%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,367.09 for a gain of 2.52 points or 0.18%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 829.90 for a gain of 2.41 points or 0.29%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,213.31 for a gain of 23.13 points or 0.28%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,568.57 for a gain of 29.14 points or 0.31%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,710.37 for a gain of 3.99 points or 0.23%; the S&P 100 Index at 1042.72 for a gain of 0.04 points or 0.01%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,397.04 for a gain of 1.42 points or 0.10%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,307.03 for a gain of 1.24 points or 0.09%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 653.01 for a gain of 1.96 points or 0.30%.
