USWNT star Megan Rapinoe announces endorsement for 2020 candidate

A big week in the news for soccer superstar Megan Rapinoe just got even bigger.

The United States Women's National Team co-captain and 2019 World Cup Champion, who was named Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year on Monday, took to Twitter on Friday to announce her endorsement of 2020 democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren for president of the United States.

Rapinoe posted a nearly two-minute-long video on social media of a phone conversation she had with Warren. The two exchanged compliments and shared concerns about the state of the country before Rapinoe stated that she was officially a member of Team Warren.

"I just don't think we can get to a better place by walking this moderate line," Rapinoe said to Warren. "I appreciate you being out front and being big and bold."

"We really believe in equity," Warren responded. "We believe in racial equity, we believe in gender equity, we believe in everybody gets a chance in this country. We can build that kind of America."

Warren went on to praise the leadership Rapinoe has shown this year, which has been rewarded with a Ballon d’Or Féminin and FIFA Award for best women's player in addition to the Sportsperson of the Year award and, of course, the World Cup championship.

Earlier in the week, Rapinoe told Reuters that "the most important thing" about the 2020 election, in her opinion, "is to get that maniac out of the White House." Rapinoe had been a target of criticism from United States President Donald Trump earlier this year for protesting during the national anthem and refusing to attend a White House ceremony in the event of a World Cup victory.
