Vertu’s Latest Luxury Android Phone Arrives with a $6,800 Price Tag

Yahoo Tech

Vertu has launched a new smartphone, its second in 2014, following the Signature Touch back in June. The new phone is called the Aster, and it comes nearly 12 months after the announcement of the 2013 Vertu Constellation, the firm’s more accessibly priced “lifestyle” model.

The Aster continues the refreshing new trend at Vertu of ensuring that the tech inside the hardware matches the high-end exterior. The screen measures 4.7 inches and has a 1080p resolution, but is covered with a 5.1-inch piece of fifth-generation sapphire crystal, and it’s all encased inside a titanium, leather clad body shell.

Last year’s Vertu Constellation was designed to appeal to people who found the Vertu Ti too masculine, or overly aggressive in its styling. The Aster is softer, too, and many of the visual improvements introduced on the Signature Touch — the smooth, sleek sides, for example — are repeated here. The leather rear panel will come in a choice of six colors, and in three different styles.

A Snapdragon 801 processor running at 2.3 GHz powers the Aster, and is accompanied by 64 GB of internal storage space. A 13-megapixel camera lens sits behind more sapphire crystal glass on the back of the phone, along with a dual-LED flash. Hasselblad has again been called in to tune the camera performance, which surprisingly didn’t translate into amazing results on the Signature Touch, so it’ll be interesting to see if there have been improvements here. Other features include global 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, an extensive array of supported languages, and wireless charging.

The Aster should sound great during calls, thanks to the usually excellent speaker, microphones, and noise canceling tech; plus it has stereo front facing speakers and Dolby Digital Plus for optimum audio performance. Vertu’s usual suite of services such as Classic Concierge, Certainty, and Life are all included, plus a wide range of customization options too. Android 4.4 KitKat is installed and is subtly enhanced.

Naturally, the Vertu Aster is quite expensive. Prices start at £4,200 (around $6,800) and rise to £5,900 ($9,550) for the most expensive Ostrich leather model. Even one of the gorgeous matching leather slip cases will set you back between £280/$450 and £590/$950. Deep pockets, then, are essential. But exclusivity never comes cheap.

UPDATE 4-Australian banks need extra $8.5 billion to meet tougher NZ capital rules

Australia's major banks shrugged off concerns about further weakness in dividend payout ratios and earnings downgrades after New Zealand announced tougher capital requirements on Thursday. The four Australian banks that dominate the New Zealand market said they will need a combined extra NZ$13 billion ($8.5 billion) to meet the new requirements, significantly less than the NZ$20 billion that had been forecast. They were also granted two years longer than anticipated to reach the higher ratios.

After Biogen's big Alzheimer's drug data reveal, observers remain divided

Biotech giant Biogen Inc. created what one attendee called an “electric atmosphere” at an industry conference Thursday when it presented new data from its controversial and potentially industry-changing Alzheimer's disease drug. It's no wonder that the analysis of data from Biogen's (Nasdaq: BIIB) drug aducanumab is attracting industry-wide attention. If approved, it would be the first-ever treatment for the deadly disease that affects 5.8 million people in the U.S. But once the dust settled, industry experts remained divided whether the data is enough to convince FDA officials to allow it on the market.

    OPEC seeks crude quota compliance

OPEC countries were to meet again here Friday after they failed to agree on output cuts that could stem price pressure from abundant reserves and weak global economic growth. Saudi and Venezuelan oil ministers voiced confidence that the 14-member Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries would strike deals on an overall output level and each member's share. OPEC countries have been mulling and additional cut that would go beyond their agreement to reduce output by 1.2 million barrels per day from October 2018 levels.

The FAANGs of Europe: U.S. tariffs won't harm appeal of French luxury firms

LONDON/PARIS (Reuters) - The U.S. threat of tariffs on French goods from handbags to Champagne proved just a glancing blow to giants like LVMH and Kering this week, as investors refused to give up their decade-long love affair with luxury goods. Equity analysts reckon the appeal of companies such as Hermes , whose Birkin handbags sell for $10,000-plus and often have waiting lists, will be undimmed despite attempts to hit their exports as retaliation for European taxation of U.S. digital companies. With a price tag of over 200 billion euros, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior owner LVMH is the biggest stock by market capitalization on the Paris exchange and is worth twice as much as pan-European planemaker Airbus which is also at the centre of the transatlantic trade war.
