VIA optronics AG's (NYSE:VIAO) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking

In this article:

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x VIA optronics AG (NYSE:VIAO) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Electronic companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.5x and even P/S higher than 5x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has VIA optronics Performed Recently?

VIA optronics certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, VIA optronics would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 21%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 59% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 1.6% during the coming year according to the one analyst following the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 6.2%, which paints a poor picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that VIA optronics' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does VIA optronics' P/S Mean For Investors?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

It's clear to see that VIA optronics maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, VIA optronics' poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
