Vin Scully is coming out of a retirement for a very special performance
Vin Scully is coming out of retirement, but it’s not to call a baseball game. Rather, it’s to lend his voice to a famous orchestral work.

Scully will be the special guest narrator at two upcoming performances of “Lincoln Portrait” at the Hollywood Bowl. “Lincoln Portrait” mixes live orchestra music with famous speeches and letters written by Abraham Lincoln. Here’s more from Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times:
The performances are featured in the July 13 and July 18 shows, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The shows also include Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
“Lincoln Portrait” premiered in 1942, and distinguished narrators over the years have included Walter Cronkite, James Earl Jones and Coretta Scott King.
Interestingly, “Lincoln Portrait” has been around slightly longer than Scully, who began calling Dodgers games in 1950 and retired last year. The first performance of “Lincoln Portrait” came in 1942. In all the years that followed, a literal who’s who of American culture has been a part of “Lincoln Portrait” performances, ranging from Bill Clinton and Neil Armstrong to Dr. J and Willie Stargell. Now you can add Scully to the list.
Tickets to see Scully’s return range from $8 to $116, so not all that different than a baseball game.
