Volatility on the climb as shares slide

Equity indexes slipped again yesterday, and volatility increased.

The S&P 500 fell 10.67 points, or 0.55 percent, to 1909.57. It closed near the session's low near 1905, which occurred in the last hour of trade. The SPX has resistance at 1940. Support is at 1900 and then 1860. The index is also back to levels last seen in late May.

The Nasdaq 100 shed 17 points, or 0.44 percent, to end at 3857.94. Support is 3800 and resistance is 3950.

The Russell 2000 declined 5.79 points, or 0.51 percent, to 1119.76. Its resistance is at 1140 and its support is at 1100.

The VIX climbed 0.29 to finish at 16.66, peaking above 17 shortly before the close. The VXST was up 0.51 to 16.76 after topping 18.

The VIX futures also followed higher and VXX rose was up 2 percent to $34.62.
