The Walking Dead is still going strong, but could the end be on the horizon?

Speaking at Comic-Con 2017, creator Robert Kirkman has revealed that he has a "definitive ending" in mind for the comics series, and that he is currently working towards it.

"I think about two or three years ago, I had a pretty good idea for a definitive ending," he said (via ComicBook). "I have known that since then and been working towards that, so I know exactly where I'm going and what's gonna happen when I get there."

Kirkman is obviously choosing to keep details of the ending close to his chest. But he did reassure fans that there was still plenty of story to come before he gets to the end game.

"I'm working towards that but it's a very long way off," he said. "I feel like [having an ending] helps.

"I feel like the book, since I know it's going to be such a long journey, we're always building to something and there's always something new that can happen and you really have to do a lot of planning, especially at this point.

"It's actually more difficult to write The Walking Dead than it's ever been, because we've done a lot of stuff.

"To be able to top yourself and keep things fresh and keep things interesting... It gets harder and harder and harder as you go. Knowing what the endgame is and working towards that, makes it a little bit easier."

The TV series is currently years behind the events in the comics series, so fans of that won't have to worry about an end anytime soon.

But it's a reminder that The Walking Dead won't go on forever, no matter how successful and popular it has been for AMC.
