Weekly ETF Fund Flows: Assets At Record $1.413T
Investors poured more than $3 billion into U.S. ETFs last week, led by the Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets Index ETF (VWO), and a rising market helped lift total ETF assets in the U.S. to a record of more than $1.413 trillion.
VWO gathered $541.4 million, with the Nos. 2 and 3 funds on IndexUniverse’s top creations list being the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Fund (DXJ) and the FlexShares Morningstar Global Upstream Natural Resources ETF (GUNR). DXJ added $519.9 million, while GUNR attracted $396.9 million, virtually all of it on Thursday, Jan. 24, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse.
Rising markets have been a big ingredient in the recent string of days ending with record assets in ETFs—a calculation that for IndexUniverse includes both ETFs and exchange-traded notes, or ETNs. In the five-day period ended yesterday, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 229 points, or 1.7 percent, to close at 13,825.33, fueled by continuing improvement in economic data.
The least-popular fund in the past week was the SPDR S'P 500 ETF (SPY), which recorded redemptions of $1.65 billion. SPY, the biggest ETF in the world by assets, ended the period with assets of $123.89 billion. SPY celebrates its 20 th anniversary on Tuesday, Jan. 29. On that day in 1993, it became the first U.S.-listed ETF.
