Weekly ETF Fund Flows: Bond Funds Shine
A number of fixed-income funds were among the most popular ETFs in the past week, as concerns about the macroeconomy crept back into the picture, particularly with regards to the job market.
The iShares Barclays 1-3 Year Treasury Bond Fund (SHY) was No. 2 on the creations list, with inflows of $287.1 million, and net inflows in the week totaled $487 million. Still, total ETF assets dipped a bit less than 1 percent to $1.453 trillion, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse, the result of the S'P 500 Index dipping 0.5 percent on concern about the economic recovery.
Weekly first-time jobless claims rose unexpectedly on Thursday, spooking the market a day ahead of the U.S. nonfarm payrolls report. The effect on asset prices of the March employment report, which showed just 88,000 jobs being created in the month, wasn’t reflected in these latest flows data.
Last week’s least popular ETF was the physical bullion ETF, the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD), which dropped $767.2 million in assets. It still remained by far the world’s second-biggest ETF, with total assets of $59.94 billion.
The world’s biggest exchange-traded fund, the SPDR S'P 500 ETF (SPY), was the most popular fund last week, raking in $1.99 billion. It ended the five-day period with assets over $131 billion.
