Weekly ETF Fund Flows: SPY Laps Up Assets
Investors poured nearly $8 billion into U.S.-listed ETFs last week, most of that in U.S. and international equities, conveying an expanding appetite for risk. Overall U.S.-listed ETF assets rose by nearly 1 percent from the prior five-day period to $1.423 trillion.
SPY celebrated its 20 th birthday by topping this week’s creations list, adding $1.43 billion over the week ending Thursday, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse. The Powershares QQQ Trust (QQQ) brought in $321.85 million, while five Vanguard funds—VIG, VTI, VNQ, VOO and VGK—peppered the Top 10 Creations list as well.
Meanwhile, fixed-income strategies were markedly the least appealing to investors. The iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond (HYG) topped the redemptions list with $367 million in outflows, followed closely by the J.P. Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond fund (EMB) in the No. 2 spot, shedding $312 million this past week.
The into-stocks-and-out-of-bonds flavor in the world of ETF flows was emblematic of financial markets and an economy that maybe—just maybe—is finally starting to normalize after a rather volatile five-year period following the market collapse in September 2008. To be sure, perils remains—not least of which is the unpredictable political situation in Washington, D.C., but a cautious optimism is coming to the fore.
