There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. By way of example, VistaGen Therapeutics (NASDAQ:VTGN) has seen its share price rise 362% over the last year, delighting many shareholders. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.

Given its strong share price performance, we think it's worthwhile for VistaGen Therapeutics shareholders to consider whether its cash burn is concerning. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is VistaGen Therapeutics' Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When VistaGen Therapeutics last reported its balance sheet in June 2021, it had zero debt and cash worth US$98m. Importantly, its cash burn was US$16m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of about 6.2 years from June 2021. While this is only one measure of its cash burn situation, it certainly gives us the impression that holders have nothing to worry about. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Is VistaGen Therapeutics' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

Whilst it's great to see that VistaGen Therapeutics has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced US$1.4m, so we don't think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. With the cash burn rate up 15% in the last year, it seems that the company is ratcheting up investment in the business over time. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but investors should be mindful of the fact that will shorten the cash runway. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

Can VistaGen Therapeutics Raise More Cash Easily?

While VistaGen Therapeutics does have a solid cash runway, its cash burn trajectory may have some shareholders thinking ahead to when the company may need to raise more cash. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

VistaGen Therapeutics' cash burn of US$16m is about 2.8% of its US$575m market capitalisation. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.

Is VistaGen Therapeutics' Cash Burn A Worry?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way VistaGen Therapeutics is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. Although its increasing cash burn does give us reason for pause, the other metrics we discussed in this article form a positive picture overall. Looking at all the measures in this article, together, we're not worried about its rate of cash burn; the company seems well on top of its medium-term spending needs. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 4 warning signs for VistaGen Therapeutics (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
