We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, Oncternal Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ONCT) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 135%. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.

In light of its strong share price run, we think now is a good time to investigate how risky Oncternal Therapeutics' cash burn is. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is Oncternal Therapeutics' Cash Runway?

You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. Oncternal Therapeutics has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the US$117m in cash it held at December 2020. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$17m. So it had a cash runway of about 6.7 years from December 2020. While this is only one measure of its cash burn situation, it certainly gives us the impression that holders have nothing to worry about. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Well Is Oncternal Therapeutics Growing?

At first glance it's a bit worrying to see that Oncternal Therapeutics actually boosted its cash burn by 4.4%, year on year. The silver lining is that revenue was up 39%, showing the business is growing at the top line. Considering the factors above, the company doesn’t fare badly when it comes to assessing how it is changing over time. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

How Easily Can Oncternal Therapeutics Raise Cash?

We are certainly impressed with the progress Oncternal Therapeutics has made over the last year, but it is also worth considering how costly it would be if it wanted to raise more cash to fund faster growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Oncternal Therapeutics has a market capitalisation of US$373m and burnt through US$17m last year, which is 4.7% of the company's market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.

Is Oncternal Therapeutics' Cash Burn A Worry?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Oncternal Therapeutics is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. While its increasing cash burn wasn't great, the other factors mentioned in this article more than make up for weakness on that measure. Looking at all the measures in this article, together, we're not worried about its rate of cash burn; the company seems well on top of its medium-term spending needs. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 3 warning signs for Oncternal Therapeutics (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
