Why Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone Skipped the 2022 Oscars·Elle

Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone, close friends and both Best Actress Oscar winners, opted not to attend tonight's Academy Award ceremony, despite projects they starred in having nods in multiple categories. Stone's Cruella has Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling nods, while Lawrence's Don't Look Up was nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing.

Stone's absence is particularly understandable, as Cruella's nominations are in non-acting categories. Lawrence's absence at first may seem striking since Don't Look Up has major category nominations. But Lawrence hasn't attended any award shows this season because the actress recently welcomed her first child. TMZ reported on Feb. 24 that Lawrence had given birth to her first child with Cooke Maroney in the Los Angeles, although no exact birth date was specified.

Lawrence was photographed out with a friend on March 2 taking a walk in Los Angeles. She hasn't been photographed by paparazzi since.

Stone also welcomed her first child a year ago with her husband Dave McCary. Stone went to Paris Fashion Week earlier this month in a very rare public appearance from the actress. She attended Louis Vuitton's show with McCary at her side.

Lawrence interviewed Stone for ELLE in August 2018. They had a pretty joke-y dynamic as they discussed acting.

“So, Emily, you and I have never talked about acting because we’re not douchelords,” Lawrence said, calling Stone by her birth name, as Emma is her stage name. “So now we should talk about acting. When you act, do you use your imagination? Do you use wounds from the past?”

“That’s a good question!” Stone responded.

“I know; I’m a great interviewer,” Lawrence replied.

“Well, I tend to use a lot of stuff that has actually happened in my life, and I pull from feelings that came with certain experiences. Then it at least feels productive to have all these feelings,” Stone laughed, “Which is why I started acting in general. And I guess I use my imagination to an extent.”

“So you can make yourself cry purely just from imagining something horrible? You’re that sensitive?” Lawrence asked.

“Jen,” Stone chided.

“I know you, but I have to ask for the people who don’t know you. Emily, are you sensitive?”

“I am sensitive on a level that is problematic,” Stone admitted.

“Emily blushes watching TV. She blushes for someone on TV,” Lawrence pointed out.

Stone laughed. “I mean, I’ve talked to my therapist about it before, and she’s like, Thank God you found [acting].”
