One of the things Meghan Markle had to give up during her transition from 'normal person' (well, relatively high profile celebrity) to 'official member of the royal family' was social media.

Neither Kate Middleton or Princes William and Harry have their own profiles on Instagram or Twitter, instead being represented on both under the umbrella of Kensington Palace. But according to new reports from the Sun, Meghan didn't quite give social media up completely.

While the Duchess of Sussex deleted her public Instagram and Twitter accounts following the announcement of her engagement to Prince Harry, it seems she may have kept a secret Intagram account going on the sly.

According to the inside information, Meghan used the account to follow her friends, but a couple of months ago she reportedly shut it down due to "vile" comments from trolls. The comments, it's claimed, left the royal feeling "isolated and alone", and so she closed the profile in order to "protect her mental health".

Aside from this information coming from an un-named (and therefore unconfirmed) source, I've got one little question that potentially compromises its authenticity. If Meghan did have a secret account, it would no doubt have been private (the woman's not stupid, she knows how obsessed people are with her). In that instance, said 'trolls' would have had to request to follow the Duchess under her alias in order to comment, and surely she wouldn't have accepted anyone on there unless she knew for certain they were the genuine profiles of her close friends?

Just a thought.

If Meghan did have a secret social media profile, then she's not the only one in her marriage to have done so. We previously reported that Prince Harry went under the alias of 'Spike Wells' on private social media accounts for many years. A Facebook account under that name - which had more than 400 friends - was deleted in 2012, in the wake of the Las Vegas drama that surrounded Harry when he was pictured naked and partying at a luxury hotel. The Prince's advisers reportedly recommended he take down the page following the scandal, to prevent any further security breaches.

So as far as we're aware, both Harry and Meghan are social media free. But considering how often they're written about in the news, it's not like their friends will struggle to keep up with what they're getting up to...
