Winter wheat coverage deadline approaching in SD

Winter wheat coverage deadline approaching in SD, choice often relates to yield election level

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- The deadline to purchase or change winter wheat coverage in South Dakota is Sept. 30.

SDSU Extension Risk and Business Management Specialist Matthew Diersen says more than 90 percent of South Dakota's wheat acres were covered by revenue protection during the 2013 crop year.

Diersen says the main choice for growers this time of year is often related to the yield election level.

Volatility in the futures price has been lower this year than its five-year average. He says that will lower premium rates for 2014, so growers should consider increasing the coverage percentage.

Growers have until Oct. 15 to plant winter wheat with full insurance coverage.
