Worcester winter parking ban lifted as storm pushes out of Central Mass.

Another round of fierce winter weather hit Central Massachusetts overnight, marked by strong winds, snow and freezing rain.

Winter Storm Izzy is expected to dump up to 6 inches of snow in some parts of Worcester County, with higher amounts slated for areas north and west of Worcester.

A winter parking ban in Worcester was lifted at 2 p.m. Monday.

Fitchburg, a city expected to receive the highest snowfall amounts, has a winter parking in effect until 6 p.m. Monday.

High winds, outages expected

Wind gusts up to 40 mph in some areas combined with snow and freezing rain could bring scattered power outages to the area.

“We’ve been closely monitoring this storm and have secured additional overhead and forestry crews as part of our emergency response plan,” Michael McCallan, National Grid vice president of New England Electric Operations, said in a statement. “In the event of a power outage, our crews and support teams will be working for as long as needed to restore service as quickly as conditions allow.”

Fitchburg electric provider Unitil likewise said it will monitoring the winter storm and will have crews at the ready in the event of outages.

“Both the consistency of the snow as it falls and the peak coastal winds will be key factors in how much this particular storm impacts our system,” Unitil spokesman Alec O’Meara said in a release. “The high winds do have the potential to create hazardous wires down situations. Should this occur, we will be working closely with first responders in the area to address public safety issues.”
