Wowcher says its customers are stockpiling loo paper in the run-up to Brexit, after its figures reportedly showed a sharp rise in users bulk-buying toilet roll.
The online deals site said a “move toward bulk ordering” suggested customers wanted to stock up on essentials amid continued political uncertainty.
Wowcher suggested customers may be concerned about potential price rises and looking to save money in case a hard or no-deal Brexit causes delays, shortages or signification inflation.
The firm said its bulk toilet paper sales were up 73% in the first three months of this year, compared to January to March 2018.
Overall toilet roll sales were also reported to be up significantly in early 2019, with a 29% rise between the first quarter of this year and the final quarter of 2018.
It said it could not release the underlying figures, but reported “over a thousand” bulk buys had been made this year for deals on brands including Luxe and Cushelle.
Alexis Harrison, Head of Marketing at Wowcher, said: “With so much uncertainty, it’s understandable that consumers want to be sure they have the essentials at home, at a great price. In the past year, we’ve seen a significant increase in sales of the most essential home product: toilet roll.
“We don’t see sales slowing down, as British shoppers continue to prioritise their spending and ensure they get the best deals on everyday products.”
