ZimVie Inc. (NASDAQ:ZIMV) Shares Fly 29% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth

Those holding ZimVie Inc. (NASDAQ:ZIMV) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 29% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 70% share price decline over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, ZimVie may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Medical Equipment industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.7x and even P/S higher than 9x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does ZimVie's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

ZimVie could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think ZimVie's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For ZimVie?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as ZimVie's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 9.9% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 13% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 3.4% each year during the coming three years according to the dual analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 8.9% growth per annum, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that ZimVie's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does ZimVie's P/S Mean For Investors?

Shares in ZimVie have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

It's clear to see that ZimVie maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
