Zion Williamson Was Drafted First Overall Wearing—What Else?—a Rolex

Welcome to Watches of the Week, where we'll track the rarest, wildest, and most covetable watches spotted on celebrities.

He celebrated, he cried, he told the time in legendary style. That’s right: in addition to a stunning white suit, Zion Williamson, the top overall pick in Thursday night’s NBA draft, wore an impressive timepiece: a Rolex Day Date with a diamond-set bezel. This is familiar territory for a brand like Rolex, which as we’ve previously discussed, is the watch most frequently selected by winners—whether that’s Tiger Woods, Andy Ruiz, and now Zion. Williamson was in good company: the very same model—the Rolex Day Date—also appeared on the wrists of Russell Westbrook and fellow draftee Darius Garland. This was a solid week for Rolex and IWC but stick around until the end of this roundup for Kelly Oubre Jr’s inspired choice.

Zion Williamson’s Rolex Day Date

Zion will undoubtedly be a great NBA player—he’s as big and dense as a refrigerator filled with blocks of concrete, is an all-world leaper, and is already phenomenal at generating memes. But he’s also already nailing another aspect of what’s expected of NBA stars today: outrageously good style. Dressed like the sixth member of Boyz II Men, Zion finished off his all-white suit with a Rolex Day Date.

Henry Golding’s IWC Portugieser Automatic

Henry Golding is really leaning into his status as classic Hollywood royalty. Beyond the generational good looks—check—he has an unbeatable watch collection he selects from for black-tie events, appearances at the Monaco Grand Prix, and casual hangs. The Portugieser is a classic IWC model and Golding’s has the brand’s signature blue dial. “Summer in New York is like no other!” he wrote on his Instagram, which, right back at you, Henry.

Russell Westbrook’s Rolex Day Date

Russell Westbrook may treat fashion as another medium to push the limits of what humans can and should reasonably do, but the watch he wore to the Acne fashion show this week is totally classic. Only Westbrook can get away with pairing his Day Date with a pair of orange rubber bracelets.

Maluma Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra Thin

Even in its simplest form the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is an absolutely iconic watch. But that’s hardly enough for Maluma, who wore a souped-up version of the model to Heron Preston’s spring/summer 2020 show in Paris: his had a pink-gold case, diamonds set into the octagon-shaped bezel, and a mesmerizing tourbillon to top it all off.

PJ Tucker’s Hublot Aerofusion Chronograph

PJ Tucker wore an all-red look to Raf Simons’s runway show in Paris this week, and he wasn’t about to disrupt his monochrome suit with any old watch. The Houston Rockets forward completed his Carrie look with a Hublot Aerofusion in a blood-red shade to match his ‘fit.

Lewis Hamilton’s IWC Big Pilot’s Watch

Watches made for pilots and race car drivers have a storied history of interchangeability. The Omega Speedmaster was originally made for the track, but it eventually became the choice of NASA astronauts trekking to the moon. When it comes to purpose, the crossover has a lot to do with these pieces’ ability to tell time infallibly, down to the second. But for Hamilton and his IWC Big Pilot’s watch, we’re guessing the choice has more to do with unimpeachable style.

Kelly Oubre Jr’s Franck Muller Conquistador King

Kelly Oubre Jr. is one of the NBA’s most unique dressers—leaning more towards distressed skinny jeans and Hot Topic staples than the latest name-brand items. His timepiece choices are apparently just as dialed in. While in Paris for fashion week, Oubre made the rounds in this Franck Muller Conquistador King. It’s a watch straight out of Alice in Wonderland, with goofy stretched hour markers and all sorts of Queen-of-Hearts red accents on the second hand, and the word “King” at the 6-o-clock position. And, of course, Oubre covered his in diamonds.

Correction (6/22/19): a former version of this article misidentified Maluma.
