Zumiez says April sales improve

LYNNWOOD, Wash. (AP) -- Action-sports clothing and equipment retailer Zumiez Inc. said Wednesday its sales improved in April, and a key sales measurement surpass Wall Street expectations.

Zumiez said its total sales grew 12 percent to $43 million over the four weeks ended May 4. Sales at stores open at least a year rose 4.6 percent. Those sales are considered an important measurement of retailer performance because they exclude results from stores that opened or closed in the last year.

Thomson Reuters says analysts expected growth of 3.3 percent at stores open at least a year.

Shares of Zumiez picked up 15 cents to $30.41 on Wednesday before the release of the sales report. They tacked on another penny in after-market trading.
