An air force helicopter returning from a rescue mission in flood-ravaged northern India hit the side of a mountain and fell into a river on Tuesday, killing eight people, officials said. Bad weather has hampered rescue efforts in Uttarakhand state, where more than 1,000 people are believed to have died and thousands of others remain stranded in remote areas because of landslides and floods triggered by torrential monsoon rains. Deadly monsoon flooding in India

India began the mass cremation of bodies recovered after devastating

floods in the country's northern Himalayan region. Hundreds of people are still missing. The floods, triggered by heavier than normal and early monsoon

rains, have killed at least 822 people and displaced tens of thousands

of inhabitants in Uttarakhand state, a popular destination for Hindu

pilgrims due to its shrines and temples. (Reuters)
