A soldier patrols as onlookers watch from a distance the security operation at the Westgate Shopping Centre, where gunmen are holding hostages, in Nairobi September 22, 2013. Islamist militants were holed up with hostages on Sunday at the shopping mall in Nairobi, where at least 59 people have been killed in an attack by the al Shabaab group that opposes Kenya's participation in a peacekeeping mission in neighbouring Somalia. A volley of gunfire lasting about 30 seconds interrupted a stalemate of several hours, a Reuters witness said, speaking from near the Westgate shopping centre that has several Israeli-owned outlets and is frequented by expatriates and Kenyans. Kenya shopping mall attack

Terrified shoppers huddled in back hallways and prayed they would not be

found by the Islamic extremist gunmen lobbing grenades and firing

assault rifles inside Nairobi's top mall on Saturday Sept. 21, 2013.

When

the coast was thought to be clear, crying mothers clutching small

children and blood-splattered men sprinted out of the four-story mall.
