The Latest: Breaks for college students back in tax bill

Congressional aides say negotiators have removed several controversial provisions from sweeping tax legislation, including one that would have eliminated the deduction for interest on student loans and another deduction for medical expenses. Two congressional aides also say the bill will no longer start taxing graduate-school tuition waivers. GOP leaders in the House and Senate have reached an agreement in principle on the biggest rewrite of the nation's tax laws in more than 30 years, though the legislation is still being finalized Wednesday.

Motor racing: Concerned Formula One drivers put on united front

By Alan Baldwin LONDON (Reuters) - Formula One drivers, including Britain's four times world champion Lewis Hamilton, have shown rare unanimity by all signing up for their union amid concern for the sport's future direction. Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) chairman Alex Wurz told the BBC on Wednesday that the Monaco-based organization now had 100 percent membership "for maybe the first time in history". Hamilton, who clinched his fourth title with Mercedes this year, has not been a member in recent seasons while others who had been outside the body had included Ferrari's 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen.

'It's Not Over.' Roy Moore Won't Concede the Alabama Senate Race to Doug Jones

While Doug Jones’ supporters were reveling in the fact that their candidate had become the first Democrat to represent Alabama in the Senate in 25 years, his Republican opponent, Roy Moore, refused to concede the race. “Realize when the vote is this close, it’s not over,” Moore said onstage Tuesday night at what was supposed to be his victory party. “And we still got to go by rules about this recount provision.” At that point, the Associated Press and several other news organizations had already projected Jones as the winner.

Bitcoin millionaire: Don't invest in bitcoin

I first invested $5,000 in bitcoin back in 2013 at $72 per coin and now own approximately 69.2 bitcoins. While I had first heard about bitcoin in 2011, it wasn't until I watched a documentary and started reading forums about the cryptocurrency that I decided to buy it. It was easy to see how bitcoin could disrupt the entire financial system. I decided to buy as a long-term experiment and used less than 1 percent of my net worth at the time to buy into bitcoin. Sure, I wanted to make money on it, but if I lost everything, it wasn't going to change the course of my life. As of this writing, bitcoin is trading at $16,600, which makes my bitcoins now worth $1,148,720. It took me five years working

Sears stock tanked almost 6% on Tuesday as the plans were likely leaked (this stuff is always leaked) -- it would be shocking if the stock doesn't dive again Wednesday.

This Monster $16 Billion Mall Deal Should Terrify Sears and Macy's

LOL: First story I read Tuesday wasn't about the dollar ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting, oil prices spiking to $65 a barrel or a key policy proposal for el Presidente Trump. Nope, it was about cryptocurrency litecoin. Over the past 24 hours, litecoin has exploded roughly 67% to $250 as interest in bitcoin futures casts a halo throughout the cryptocurrency realm. Litecoin's market cap: $13.1 billion at last check. That's nowhere near bitcoin's almost $300 billion, but still worth more than Sears (SHLD) ($459 million) and impressive in the grand scheme of things. Wondering what litecoin is? It's described as being a lightweight alternative to bitcoin. Whatever that means ... Quick take on

Ex-Trump Aide Carter Page Tries to Scuttle AT&T-Time Warner Deal

Former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page argued in court papers on Tuesday that AT&T should not be permitted to buy CNN parent Time Warner because there was a risk it would lead to “recklessness” in journalism. Page, whose contacts with Russia have been under scrutiny by Congress and a special counsel, made his argument in a friend-of-the-court brief that the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has yet to accept. Trump criticized the deal on the campaign trail last year and has repeatedly attacked the reporting of Time Warner’s CNN news network.

Housing Finance Bill Critical for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

The Senate is reportedly working on a draft of a house financing reform bill that could have huge implications for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Since 2012, all of Fannie and Freddie's profits have been turned over to the government under the terms of their bailouts during the financial crisis. The good news for Fannie and Freddie started in May when Federal Housing Finance Agency director Mel Watt said it would be irresponsible to keep the two government-sponsored entities under government conservatorship without recapitalizing them to provide a cushion in the event of another housing market downturn.

This time it’s venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, Facebook’s former head of user growth, who told the Stanford Graduate School of Business that he feels “tremendous guilt” over Facebook’s divisive role in society, as exploited by Russian agents in last year’s U.S. election.
