    Oppenheimer raises S&P 500 target to 5,500: Here's why

Oppenheimer Asset Management Chief Investment Strategist John Stoltzfus revised his forecast for the S&P 500 (^GSPC), upping the index's year-end target to 5,500. Similarly, Goldman Sachs forecasted the S&P 500 could go as high as 6,000 points in 2024 — or fall back down to 4,500 if Big Tech lags behind Wall Street estimates. Stoltzfus joins Yahoo Finance Live to talk about the reasoning behind his new price target for the S&P 500 index. "What backs this upgrade in terms of our target price for the S&P 500 is a number of things, including the Federal Reserve has been very sensitive this fed funds hike cycle if you consider they've raised rates 11 times, paused for six at high levels relative to where we were before. So they've taken the fed funds rate from zero — a band of 0.0 to 0.25% to a band of 5.25% to 5.5% within two years — and have not pushed the economy into a recession," Stoltzfus explains. "It's been good for business if you take a look at the earnings for the S&P 500, third quarter and fourth quarter of last year." There's still potential for market volatility: Strategist

Earnings season is crucial for setting the market's tone in 2024. While earnings results appear lackluster compared to previous years, is it still too early for investors to go all in on buying the dip? "There's still potential for volatility here, so it's not too late to wait for a dip to get into the market, and certainly it's not too late to get into the market now if you know that you're going to be investing for the long term," Wells Fargo Investment Institute Investment Strategy Analyst Veronica Willis says to Yahoo Finance. Willis comments on the defensive sectors she is favoring and what she is predicting from the Federal Reserve's interest rate cut timeline. Earnings season: What's expected to move markets the most

As Big Banks kick off earnings season, experts are patiently waiting to see what the next monetary policy decision will be from the Federal Reserve. Bank earnings have the potential to set the tone for markets in 2024. Envestnet PMC Co-CIO Dana D'Auria joins Yahoo Finance to give insight into what investors can focus on to see what will move the market more. D'Auria points out that tech and communications, holding about 30% of the value of the S&P 500 (^GSPC), will continue to be a focus for investors to see where the market will move: "Earnings is where you kind of start to suss out how cyclical are some of the revenues that those companies depend on. Ad revenue, for example, where if we do... trend into a light recession even, which we're getting some forecasts for now... I think there's kind of a 'Hey, we're going to stick the landing or maybe... a light recession.'"
