China, not Tesla, is driving the electric-car revolution

The electric vehicle revolution is coming, but it won’t be driven by the U.S. Instead, China will be at the forefront. The shift is already happening in China, which is the world’s largest automobile market, with 23 million cars sold in 2018. Many of them are buying electric cars.

S.Korea automakers' group urges end to subsidies for Chinese EVs

A South Korean automakers' group called on Friday for an end to generous state subsidies for sales of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), citing a potential threat to local automakers and Beijing's "discrimination" against EVs equipped with Korean batteries. Jeong Marn-ki, president of the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association, said Chinese automakers could boost EV exports as domestic demand suffered from a phasing out of Beijing's EV subsidies and a trade dispute with the United States.

The uphill road: battery limitations to test China's electric vehicle ambitions

BEIJING/DETROIT (Reuters) - It took one 330 kilometer trip from Chongqing to Chengdu in his Nio ES8, a seven-seater all-electric SUV, for its owner Wang Haichun to be consumed with buyer's remorse. Despite being billed as capable of going 335 km on a single full charge, the ES8 didn't get anywhere near that when driving on freeways at speeds above 100 km per hour (60mph), he said, adding that after 180 km, there was only 50 km of range left. Asked to comment on Wang's experience, Nio Inc said in an e-mailed statement the ES8 can travel more than 200 km when constantly driven at a 100 km per hour and that battery swap stations are available for quick recharging.

Worried about nickel supply, China battery maker BYD welcomes JV discussions

Securing enough nickel is a major worry for electric vehicle firms, an executive from Chinese electric car and battery maker BYD Co Ltd said on Thursday, adding that the company would welcome joint ventures that help guarantee supply. Nickel is one of several metals that are key components of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. A shift in battery chemistry toward higher nickel content, which would allow cars to go further on a single charge, is expected to boost demand further.

Exclusive: United States sets sights on China in new electric vehicle push

While Volkswagen AG, Tesla Inc and other electric-focused automakers and battery manufacturers are expanding in the United States and investing billions in the new technology, they are reliant on mineral imports without a major push to develop more domestic mines and processing facilities. China already dominates the electric vehicle supply chain. It produces nearly two-thirds of the world's lithium-ion batteries - compared to 5 percent for the United States - and controls most of the world's lithium processing facilities, according to data from Benchmark Minerals Intelligence, which tracks prices for lithium and other commodities and is organizing the Washington, D.C., event.

Daimler taps Goldman to raise China BAIC shareholding - sources

Daimler has asked Goldman Sachs to help it explore increasing its stake in Chinese carmaker BAIC Motor Corp, its main China joint venture partner, two people with knowledge of the matter said. A deal would be only the second since the world's biggest auto market relaxed foreign ownership rules last year. Daimler's rival BMW became the first to take advantage of the changes when it agreed in October to buy control of its venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd for 3.6 billion euros (£3.1 billion).

Chinese EV maker BYD says 2018 preliminary profit down 31 percent, blames competition

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD Co Ltd reported preliminary net profit for 2018 that was 31.4 percent lower than a year earlier, pinning the blame on intensifying competition in the world's biggest auto market. The result comes as China's market for new energy vehicles is booming, but profit in the sector is being squeezed by competition between established automakers and a multitude of startups, as well as the government's reduction of subsidies. Profit likely fell to 2.79 billion yuan ($416.5 million) from 4.07 billion yuan, as slowing auto sales across China increased competitive activity among car makers and hit the profitability of the fuel vehicle business, BYD said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange late on Tuesday.

Buffett appears to fault Trump, laments M&A dearth in Berkshire letter

Buffett lamented these states of affairs in his widely read annual letter to Berkshire shareholders. Accompanying the letter was more bad news, that sinking stock prices and a big writedown for the company's Kraft Heinz Co investment fuelled a $25.39 billion (£19.4 billion) fourth-quarter net loss, and caused Berkshire to post its lowest annual profit since 2001. Buffett uses his shareholder letters to focus on Berkshire's operating businesses, tout the strength of the U.S. economy, and criticize thinking and business practices that get in the way.
