Beijing has made good on its promise to retaliate against countries that impose entry restrictions on Chinese travellers by suspending the issuance of some visas for South Korean and Japanese citizens. Shares in South Korean carriers Asiana Airlines Inc. and Korean Air Lines Co. rallied Tuesday after a U.K. antitrust watchdog said it is considering accepting a revised plan to address competition concerns about the companies' planned merger. Asiana's shares surged as much as 24% to 14,450 won ($10.77) in morning trade, the sharpest intraday gain in 22 months, and Korean Air rose 4.9% to KRW25,750, its steepest daily rise in more than two weeks, according to FactSet. The rally came after the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority said Monday that it is considering new measures Korean Air has proposed to address competition concerns over its $1.29 billion plan to acquire financially-strapped Asiana.
A Korean Air Lines Co Ltd jet with 173 people on board overshot the runway at Cebu International Airport in the Philippines late on Sunday, the airline said, adding that there were no injuries and all passengers had evacuated safely. The Airbus SE A330 widebody flying from Seoul to Cebu had tried twice to land in poor weather before it overran the runway on the third attempt at 23:07 (1507 GMT), Korean Air said in a statement on Monday. Korean Air President Keehong Woo issued an apology on the airline's website, saying a thorough investigation would be carried out by Philippine and South Korean authorities to determine the cause.
