South Korean messaging app service provider Kakao Corp is aiming to acquire global content providers in Japan and the United States after successfully raising $1 billion from foreign investors, a senior company executive said. "Games are a very important sector of Kakao. Japan and the United States are our primary targets," Bae Jae-hyun, an executive vice president at Kakao, told Reuters on Friday.
Japan's Line Corp plans to launch a cryptocurrency exchange, a move that comes as regulators investigate such exchanges in the country after hackers stole $530 million in digital money from Coincheck in one of the world's biggest cyberheists. Line said in a statement on Wednesday that it has applied to Japan's financial regulator to operate an exchange, with the application under review. Japan's Financial Services Agency, which oversees registrations of new exchanges, said on Monday it would investigate all cryptocurrency exchanges in Japan for security gaps after the hack at the Coincheck exchange.
