Foreign airlines to face new rivals on popular China routes as restrictions ease

Foreign airlines that fly on 20 popular long-haul routes to China will face fresh competitive pressure as Beijing begins to ease decade-old restrictions on Oct. 1, allowing more Chinese carriers to offer service. The change affects about 20 percent of Chinese long-haul daily capacity, according to data compiled for Reuters by Chinese aviation data firm Variflight. It will turn up the heat on U.S. and European carriers like United Airlines (UAL.O) and Air France KLM (AIRF.PA), which have higher costs, lower outbound demand from their countries and less cultural appeal to Chinese travelers.

[$$] It Is Time for Chinese Airline Stocks to Unfasten Their Seatbelts

China’s biggest airlines are ready to turn off their seat belt signs after a period of turbulence. All three airlines suffered heavy FX-related losses in the first half: Factor them out of Air China’s numbers, for example, and pretax profit would have been up 6.8%, rather than down 3.2%. China Southern, for example, reduced its dollar-denominated borrowings and lease obligations as a portion of total borrowings and lease obligations to 34% by the end of 2017, from 93% three years earlier.

Air China plans to sell cargo stake, first-half profit rises

Air China Ltd said it would sell a 51 percent stake in Air China Cargo to a sister unit for 2.44 billion yuan (274.47 million pounds) to focus more on its passenger unit, as it reported a 4.3 percent rise in first-half profit. China's flag carrier said in a Thursday statement that while Air China Cargo's profitability had improved, intensifying competition, exchange rate fluctuations and the complicated international trade situation had created many uncertainties. "Therefore the sale of Air China Cargo is the company's strategic and rational response to the air cargo market's uncertainties, to strengthen the stability of the company's operations," it said.

Paris Police: Mix-up Behind the Return of Air China Plane

An Air China flight to Beijing returned to Paris on Thursday after an airline employee misunderstood a passenger who was calling on the phone and thought he was reporting a bomb on the plane, Paris airport police said. China's official Xinhua News Agency initially reported that the plane turned back because of "suspected terrorist information." Not so, according to an official with the airport police prefecture, the state body that oversees security at the city's airports. The passenger, speaking in English, called Air China to say he was stuck behind police lines that were set up at Charles de Gaulle Airport's Terminal 1 while officers investigated an abandoned package.

China clips Air China's wings after descent scare

China's aviation regulator will reduce Air China's Boeing 737 flights by 10 percent and cancel licenses of the pilot and co-pilot involved in an emergency descent last week, in a move analysts say could push the airline to cut some routes. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) will also launch a safety crackdown on the Chinese flag carrier for three months and fine the airline 50,000 yuan ($7,460), China Central Television (CCTV) said on its WeChat account. The CAAC also suspended the licenses of other staff involved in the emergency incident that was linked to a co-pilot smoking in the cockpit, CCTV added.
