China's new home prices edge up, gains extend to larger cities

China's new home prices rose for their 35th consecutive month in March, with more cities reporting growth as the government supported demand from first-time buyers and despite persistent curbs to dampen speculative demand. Average new home prices in China's 70 major cities rose 0.4 percent in March from the previous month, up from 0.2 percent growth in February, Reuters calculated from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data published on Wednesday. On a yearly basis, new home prices increased 4.9 percent in March, slowing from February's 5.2 percent increase, partly due to a high base effect as policymakers rushed to impose a flurry of fresh tightening measures in late March last year.

China's winter resorts face tougher terrain despite Olympics excitement

At its peak a decade ago, the Muchengjian mine churned out mountains of coal on the western outskirts of Beijing. Now, the mine in Beijing's Mentougou district is pinning its future on whiter slopes: It plans to transform itself into a winter sports resort, turning some of the underground shafts where miners once chiselled coal into a 1.25-kilometer airconditioned track for cross country skiing. An apres-ski spa and a department store selling winter sports gear are also on the drawing board.

As China's home prices cool, some property companies seek to reduce risks

As the froth comes off China’s home prices, there are increasing signs that some property developers, particularly those with a heavy debt load, are becoming less aggressive. The risk is that if apartment prices drop the developers will be left with expensive unsold properties and suffer losses at a time when their debt levels are already dangerously high. A minority, such as Tianjin-based Sunac Holdings (1918.HK), are planning to reduce their land purchases and focus instead on selling more of the apartments they have already built.
