Hopes were raised this week that China may relax the restrictions on foreign ownership of Chinese car manufacturers. This was after China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the National Development and reform Commission (NDRC) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) published the 'Auto Industry Medium and Long Term Development Plan'. The statement which prompted speculation that China may remove the 50% cap on foreign ownership of car making joint ventures was that China will 'liberalise the restriction on joint venture shareholding in an orderly fashion'.
